The Specialist Program in Evolutionary Anthropology equips students with training in human biological evolution along with the role that culture plays in shaping human physiology and anatomy. This program builds the analytical and research skills necessary for graduate research as well as offering preparation for eventual career paths in fields such as public health, conservation, forensic science, or education.
Students are encouraged to meet with the Undergraduate Program Coordinator to build a course plan appropriate to their interests, from paleoanthropology to primate behavior to human adaptation. Supervised research and reading courses (ANTC04H3, ANTD32H3) offer opportunities to work closely with faculty on specialized projects and to potentially gain ‘hands-on’ lab experience.
Note: these advanced options require prior arrangement and have specific prerequisites. Students may pursue a standalone Specialization, or pair their interests with Biology.
Program Requirements
The Program requires completion of 12.0 credits, as indicated below.
1. 1.0 credit as follows:
ANTA01H3 Introduction to Anthropology: Becoming Human
ANTA02H3 Introduction to Anthropology: Society, Culture and Language
2. ANTB14H3 Evolutionary Anthropology
3. ANTB15H3 Human Biological Variation and Evolution
4. 10.0 credits at the B-level or above, of which at least 5.0 credits must be at the C- or D-level, including at least 1.0 credit at the D-level. At least 7.5 credits must be composed of ANT courses identified as "Science credit" in the UTSC Academic Calendar.
Note: ANTB14H3 and ANTB15H3 are prerequisites for C- and D-level courses in the Evolutionary Anthropology program.
