Media shape nearly every part of contemporary life. They influence how we communicate, learn, socialize, create art, love, vote, and make sense of the world around us. From social media feeds, streaming services, games, and mobile apps to journalism, advertising, and emerging technologies such AI and virtual reality, media are not just things we use: they actively organize everyday experiences. We live our lives both in and through media. Studying media means asking who creates media, who owns media conglomerates, how media circulates, and how it shapes identities, communities, and culture. The focus of this program is on media at the local, national, and global scale. We are attentive to critical questions of class, race, gender, sexuality, and other forms of representation and difference. Students develop the critical, theoretical, and analytical skills needed to understand how media industries produce and circulate information, how media forms shape what we know, and how digital technologies are transforming the arts, society, and institutions. In other words, Media and Communication Studies is for students who want to understand the forces shaping contemporary society and to become more thoughtful, informed, and critically engaged participants in it.
